Is a traditional handwoven textile from Bhavani, a town located at the confluence of the rivers Kaveri River, Bhavani River, and Amudha River. This craft dates back over 200 years and is closely associated with the local weaving community.

Jamakkalams are thick, durable floor spreads or carpets traditionally woven using coarse cotton yarn. The craft flourished during the 19th century when local weavers began producing these textiles in large quantities for domestic use and trade. Over time, Bhavani became a major center for jamakkalam production, known for its bold stripes, vibrant colors, and geometric patterns.

The weaving process is typically carried out on pit looms, where artisans manually interlace dyed yarns to create sturdy and long-lasting fabrics. Natural dyes were originally used, but modern production often includes synthetic colors to meet market demand.

Recognizing its cultural and economic importance, Bhavani Jamakkalam received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2005, protecting its authenticity and origin. Today, it remains a symbol of Tamil Nadu’s rich textile heritage, supporting thousands of weavers and continuing to be used in homes, temples, and cultural events.
